Carnival + other strange experiences

Traveling words to live by: Living with a best friend can be really hard. Traveling with a best friend is the best.

Pre-Venice weekend: This past week was full of its fair share of ups and downs. Major low points included: finding out my camera is really broken, rain + hail in one day, getting dragged by a stranger/nun/old Italian woman from convent to convent asking if they had any room for me to live there. High points included: getting a new coat way on sale, going to the Vermeer to Rembrandt show, meeting the artist Mark Kostabi and going to his apartment/studio (totally crazy, totally fabulous and totally in love with himself. Look up his art, you might recognize it).

Venice weekend: What a strange place Venice is! To begin with, it's not exactly my thang, if you know what I mean. Nothing about that city works or makes sense at all. Public transportation is slow, old and expensive. Not to mention I felt a bit like Margarita all weekend long as I came to realize how much I hate most people, crowds, stupid children, and costumes. However it was quite the spectacle! The weather was great! The costumes were out of control. Every man, woman, and creature were dressed up. Salvatore and I even dawned masks and hit the town. The hostel was great/strange. It was completely clean, friendly, and illegal. I wasn't exactly sure of the legitimacy of the entire operation. Funnily enough Salvatore and I some how wound up in the princess sweet with a giant bed (our other friends were down the hall in the slave quarters haha). Needless to say we really didn't spend that much time there. However we met a lot of random people from all over the place. Made some new friends. All the usual hostel business. In the end, the trip was great. I'm not sure I would ever go back to Venice again unless I was staying in the Londra Palace (closed for complete renovations, family, do you remember this place?? So much better than my location this last weekend!). Mostly, I just think Venice is a pain in the ass.

This week: First italian quiz coming up...no worries my teacher has now moved this back twice. I will study when the time comes that I actually decide to take her or our assignments seriously.

Best, Lauren
